    Comparative Study on m-Learning Usage Among LIS Students from Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan

    Mobile learning (m-learning) is gaining its importance in recent years. For libraries, it is inevitable to adapt to this trend and provide various information services and support for m-learning. This paper studies the m-learning usage of Library and Information Science (LIS) students, who will be the new blood for the library in future. In this paper, we invited 267 subjects from Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan to participate in our online survey. We found that LIS students from these regions do adopt communication tools and social media for m-learning. However, they less frequently use their smartphones for academic reading. Plus, they rely more on search engines for fulfilling their information needs instead of library resources. We also found that the lack of a mobile version of the library website constitutes a significant barrier in m-learning, but the lack of mobile apps is relatively acceptable by the respondents. The result of this study shows that there are no big differences in m-learning usage among the three regions, except that LIS students from Hong Kong are accessing the learning management platforms via their smartphones more frequently compared to students from Japan and Taiwan.postprin

    Combined oestrogen and progesterone for preventing miscarriage

    © 2013 The Cochrane Collaboration. Background: Historically, oestrogen and progesterone were each commonly used to save threatened pregnancies. In the 1940s it was postulated that their combined use would be synergistic and thereby led to the rationale of combined therapy for women who risked miscarriage. Objectives: To determine the efficacy and safety of combined oestrogen and progesterone therapy to prevent miscarriage. Search methods: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (23 June 2013) CENTRAL (OVID) (The Cochrane Library 2013, Issue 6 of 12), MEDLINE (OVID) (1946 to June Week 2 2013), OLDMEDLINE (1946 to 1965), Embase (1974 to Week 25 2013), Embase Classic (1947 to 1973), CINAHL (1994 to 23 June 2013) and reference lists of retrieved studies. Selection criteria: We included randomised controlled trials that assessed the effectiveness of combined oestrogen and progesterone for preventing miscarriage. We included one stratified randomised trial and one quasi-randomised trials. Cluster-randomised trials were eligible for inclusion but none were identified. We excluded studies published only as abstracts. We included studies that compared oestrogen and progesterone versus placebo or no intervention. Data collection and analysis: Two review authors independently assessed trials for inclusion and assessed trial quality. Two review authors extracted data. Data were checked for accuracy. Main results: Two trials (281 pregnancies and 282 fetuses) met our inclusion criteria. However, the two trials had significant clinical and methodological heterogeneity such that a meta-analysis combining trial data was considered inappropriate. One trial (involving 161 pregnancies) was based on women with a history of diabetes. It showed no statistically significant difference between using combined oestrogen and progestogen and using placebo for all our proposed primary outcomes, namely, miscarriage (risk ratio (RR) 0.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.32 to 2.80), perinatal death (RR 0.94, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.69) and preterm birth (less than 34 weeks of gestation) (RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.80 to 1.04). In terms of this review's secondary outcomes, use of combined oestrogen and progestogen was associated with an increased risk of maternal cancer in the reproductive system (RR 6.65, 95% CI 1.56 to 28.29). However, for the outcome of cancer other than that of the reproductive system in mothers, there was no difference between groups. Similarly, there were no differences between the combined oestrogen and progestogen group versus placebo for other secondary outcomes reported: low birthweight of less than 2500 g, genital abnormalities in the offspring, abnormalities other than genital tract in the offspring, cancer in the reproductive system in the offspring, or cancer other than of the reproductive system in the offspring. The second study was based on pregnant women who had undergone in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). This study showed no difference in the rate of miscarriage between the combined oestrogen and progesterone group and the no treatment group (RR 0.66, 95% CI 0.23 to 1.85). The study did not report on this review's other primary outcomes (perinatal death or rates of preterm birth), nor on any of our proposed secondary outcomes. Authors' conclusions: There is an insufficient evidence from randomised controlled trials to assess the use of combined oestrogen and progesterone for preventing miscarriages. We strongly recommend further research in this area

    Exploring undergraduate students’ usage pattern of mobile apps for education

    In recent years, with the general adoption of smartphones with computing power comparable to desktop computers, mobile applications (apps) have experienced a surge in popularity. However, there are few studies conducted about their educational use, especially in Southeast Asia. To close this research gap, this study aims to provide a current overview of mobile apps usage in higher education. Besides exploring the actual use of apps, the technology acceptance model was applied to examine (1) undergraduate students’ perceptions, which involve perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, towards adopting mobile apps for educational purposes, and (2) their overall attitude toward such adoption. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data from 150 undergraduate students in Business, Education, and Engineering in Hong Kong. The results show undergraduate students use mobile apps frequently to engage in learning activities related to their academic studies, with a particularly focus on communication and collaborative working, accessing academic resources, and checking a dictionary. However, the discrepancies in using apps for academic purposes are not significant between the three faculties. Meanwhile, perceived usefulness has a more positive impact on overall attitude compared with the impact of perceived ease of use. The investigation will help tertiary institutions, library service providers, and educators develop and assess strategic planning for education collaborating with mobile apps. This paper could also give app developers some suggestions for app design based on actual usage and students’ information needs.preprin

    Educational Usage of Mobile Devices: Differences Between Postgraduate and Undergraduate Students

    The rapid increase of smartphone usage in recent years has provided students the opportunity to participate in mobile learning (m-learning) anywhere, anytime. Academic institutions are also following this trend to launch many m-learning services. This article investigates the differences of the user needs between undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students though an online survey with 140 Library Information Systems (LIS) subjects in a Japanese university in order to provide solid foundations for future m-learning studies. We find that UG and PG students do not show significant differences in adopting m-learning by smartphones despite the fact that they have different learning patterns. The m-learning frequencies of smartphones generally range from weekly to monthly, where using search engines is the most frequent, and reading academic resources is the least frequent. They tend to use these services for handling their daily routines (such as search engine, social networks) rather than their academic activities (such as using online databases to search for academic materials). Further, the results also show that content displaying issues (e.g., small display screen, text unable to enlarge) are barriers for most subjects in using these m-learning services.postprin

    Successful control of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium outbreak in a neurosurgical unit at non-endemic region

    Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have emerged in many parts of the world, but have only been reported sporadically in Hong Kong. We report an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) in a neurosurgical unit at a tertiary teaching hospital between 3 March and 3 April 2009 in Hong Kong. During the outbreak investigation, clinical samples from 193 (91.5%) of 211 patients who had stayed in the neurosurgical unit and 506 environmental samples were screened for VREfm. Besides the index case, another 3 (1.6%) out of 192 patients were found to be positive for VREfm. Two (0.4%) out of 506 environmental samples were positive for VREfm. All four clinical and two environmental isolates were found to be clonally related by pulse-field gel electrophoresis. The risk factors for nosocomial acquisition of VREfm included advanced age (P¼0.047), presence of nasogastric tubing (P¼0.002) and tracheostomy (Po0.001), and the use of b-lactam antibiotics (Po0.001) and vancomycin (P¼0.001). Contrary to other VRE outbreaks in which the spread was rapid, the neurosurgical patients’ immobilization because of coma and mechanical ventilation dependency, and the vigilant practice of hand hygiene by health-care workers successfully limited the number of secondary cases despite the delayed recognition of the index case. All patients with VREfm were labeled in the hospital network information system so that stringent infection control measures with contact precautions would be carried out once these patients were readmitted to prevent its spread in our locality.published_or_final_versio

    We investigated differences in outcomes between 68 children hospitalized with macrolide-sensitive Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MSMP group) and 25 children hospitalized with macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae pneumonia (MRMP group).     Use of smartphones by art and design students for accessing library services and learning

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore art and design students’ use of smartphones for accessing library services and learning at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI). Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire survey involving 51 HKDI students was conducted to examine the students’ utilization of apps and the internet on mobile devices to find information for the purpose of academic learning, social networking, and collaborative learning. Findings – Survey results showed that while the HKDI students were all smartphone owners and active users of such mobile communication devices, only a minority of them “frequently” use these mobile devices for formal learning purposes. They demonstrated a keen preference to use search engines, social communications, and other diverse use of smartphones. Except for research and image/audio-visual needs, the rest of their needs and usage behaviour is similar to mainstream university students. Practical implications – The results suggest opportunities for the libraries to develop services and facilities that could better fulfil students’ information needs, and to improve the network coverage outside the library. Originality/value – This is probably the first study of its kind to explore art and design students’ use of smartphones for learning needs. In particular, the recent capability of smartphones and mobile internet speed are comparable with desktops, it is vital to re-examine the much changed environment and user needs.postprin

    Clinical outcome of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli bacteremia in an area with high endemicity

    Objectives: This study assessed the impact of discordant empirical antibiotic therapy on the outcome of bacteremia caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. Methods: The clinical features and outcomes of a cohort of patients hospitalized with ESBL E. coli bacteremia between 2007 and 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. The effect of different antimicrobial regimens on patient outcomes was analyzed. Results: ESBL E. coli accounted for 24.2% (207/857) of E. coli bacteremia cases. The urinary tract (43.6%) was the most common source of infection, followed by the hepatobiliary tract (23.0%). Discordant empirical antibiotic therapy was given to 52.0% patients. Admission to the intensive care unit was associated with the use of a carbapenem as empirical antibiotic therapy (p<. 0.001). Univariate analysis revealed no significant differences in 30-day mortality rates between patients receiving concordant and discordant empirical antibiotic therapy (23.5% vs. 19.8%, p=. 0.526), carbapenem and non-carbapenem empirical antibiotic therapy (29.8% vs. 19.1%, p=. 0.118), beta-lactam/beta-lactam inhibitor combinations (BLBLIs) and non-BLBLIs empirical antibiotic therapy (20.3% vs. 22.3%, p=. 0.734), cephalosporin and non-cephalosporin empirical antibiotic therapy (19.7% vs. 22.6%, p=. 0.639), and fluoroquinolone and non-fluoroquinolone empirical antibiotic therapy (8.3% vs. 22.4%, p=. 0.251). The findings were confirmed by multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Despite a high proportion of discordant empirical antibiotic therapy, ESBL production had little effect on 30-day mortality.     Why read it on your mobile device? Change in reading habit of electronic magazines for university students

    Magazines, often published periodically with a variety of contents, have long been successful in catering to magazine readers' various content needs and reading interests. In recent years, interactive digital magazines instead of replicas of printed magazines, based on digital devices have been gaining popularity and preference due to its unrivaled convenience and interactivity. To some extent, many people's magazine-reading habits have been changed due to their adoption of mobile digital devices. This study is designed to analyze mobile digital devices' influence on magazine reading habits amongst university students in Hong Kong. Issues such as mobile digital devices' level of adoption amongst university students and their preferences on devices for different magazine types are analyzed. Our findings show that university students in Hong Kong read more types of magazines after they started to use mobile digital devices, mainly using tablets. The findings of the study are useful for librarians (academic librarians in particular) and digital publishing vendors to explore the issues concerning services and collection development of interactive digital resources
